Efficient skyline refinement using trade-offs respecting don't care attributes

چکیده
Skyline Queries have received a lot of attention due to their intuitive query formulation. Following the concept of Pareto optimality all ‘best’ database items satisfying different aspects of the query are returned to the user. However, this often results in huge result set sizes. In everyday’s life users face the same problem. But here, when confronted with a too large variety of choices users tend to focus only on some aspects of the attribute space at a time and try to figure out acceptable compromises between these attributes. Such trade-offs are not reflected by the Pareto paradigm. Incorporating them into user preferences and adjusting skyline results accordingly thus needs special algorithms beyond traditional sky-lining. In this paper we propose a novel algorithm for efficiently incorporating such typical trade-off information into preference orders. Furthermore, we allow for “don’t care” semantics on certain attributes expressing ones indecisiveness given certain preconditions. Our experiments on both real world and synthetic data sets show the impact of our techniques: impractical skyline sizes efficiently become manageable with a minimum amount of user interaction. Additionally, we also design a method to elicit especially interesting trade-offs promising a high reduction of skyline sizes. At any point, the user can choose whether to provide individual trade-offs, or accept those suggested by the system. The benefit of incorporating tradeoffs into the strict Pareto semantics is clear: result sets become manageable, while additionally getting more focused on the users’ information needs.

Preference Trade-Offs - Towards Manageable Skylines
Skyline queries are generally considered as a promising technique for mitigating the challenges posed by the ever growing amount of available information. However, despite nearly a decade of research, the application of the Skyline paradigm in real-world information systems still failed to succeed. This fact was mainly attributed to two major problems: the poor performance of the employed algor...

Skyline Queries have recently received a lot of attention due to their intuitive query capabilities. Following the concept of Pareto optimality all ‘best’ database objects are returned to the user. However, this often results in unmanageable large result set sizes hampering the success of this innovative paradigm. As an effective remedy for this problem, trade-offs provide a natural concept for...
متن کاملEthical Perspective: Five Unacceptable Trade-offs on the Path to Universal Health Coverage
This article discusses what ethicists have called “unacceptable trade-offs” in health policy choices related to universal health coverage (UHC). Since the fiscal space is constrained, trade-offs need to be made. But some trade-offs are unacceptable on the path to universal coverage. Unacceptable choices include, among other examples from low-income countries, to expand coverage for services wit...
متن کاملGetting Prime Cuts from Skylines over Partially Ordered Domains
Skyline queries have recently received a lot of attention due to their intuitive query formulation: users can state preferences with respect to several attributes. Unlike numerical preferences, preferences over discrete value domains do not show an inherent total order, but have to rely on partial orders as stated by the user. In such orders typically many object values are incomparable, increa...
متن کاملIncremental Trade-Off Management for Preference-Based Queries
Preference-based queries often referred to as skyline queries play an important role in cooperative query processing. However, their prohibitive result sizes pose a severe challenge to the paradigm‟s practical applicability. In this paper we discuss the incremental re-computation of skylines based on additional information elicited from the user. Extending the traditional case of totally ordere...
